Defend The Promise: Bridging Law and Lived Realities

By: Womens Global Network for Reproductive Rights Africa (WGNRR Africa)

Story February 3, 2026

A Regional Campaign for SRHR Justice

Across East Africa, a critical disconnect exists: legal frameworks on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) often fail to reflect the lived realities of women, girls, and gender-diverse people.

While Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya have committed to international frameworks like the Maputo Protocol, these promises are often only partially realized. Restrictive laws and persistent stigma continue to drive preventable maternal deaths and unsafe procedures.

The Power of Partnership

To bridge this gap, three heavyweights in advocacy and media joined forces to commemorate September 28, International Safe Abortion Day:

Through the #DefendThePromise digital storytelling campaign and a regional hybrid event in Dar es Salaam, this initiative united digital advocacy with boots-on-the-ground mobilization.

Key Objectives & Impact

The campaign aligned with the global theme: “Safe Abortion is Life-saving Healthcare!” and focused on three core pillars:

Our Shared Vision

We are fighting for a future where abortion care is: Safe & Legal , Timely & Affordable, Stigma-Free

"This initiative is about moving beyond signatures on a protocol. It is about fostering solidarity and mobilizing youth-driven advocacy to ensure that reproductive justice is a reality for everyone, everywhere."
